❤️ Dear Aunty Pua ❤️ It’s taken me a long time to find the words to say how much you’ve meant to me, and to so many of us.

Your practice of putting “guts on the table” is now legendary. I’m so glad I got to hear more of your stories last October and was able to tell you in person what an inspiration you are to me, and that we stand on your shoulders. Your “students” are everywhere, quietly making change.

You understood innately that the pathway to systems change, the pathway to pono is through healing. You understood the power of sacred ceremony, translating it into a civic context. Masterful. What results is something we feel, which is how alchemy and transformation happens ❤️Being in the presence of aloha is deep medicine. You embodied it, modeled it, catalyzed it within your beloved community. I continue to learn from you; your superpower is still resonating.

At the root, it’s CONNECTION.

I knew without a doubt my kuleana in this Chang ‘Ohana reunion planning was to create the conditions that would nurture relationships and nurture the roots of connectedness. Having family is truly a gift, and this was my gift to my family!

Our friday night games got our two branches of our family (and our own branch!) reconnecting beyond the surface. We also had FUN understanding our ancestors, our roots to each other. And i got to do it with my cousin Malia who is a master at nurturing the energy in the room.

I can’t tell you why i am drawn to this (yes, i am the daughter of a kickass teacher) but i am so passionate about creating experiences that can be transformative for people. I’ve been quietly building this interest and competency in working with groups to seed connection; it feels like a natural companion to amazing visuals that seed connection of understanding. We had an incredible weekend on west side Kaua’i, I love you my family!

Aloha i ke Kai, the Hawai‘i Ocean Stewardship Fee Program collects $1 per ocean activity to revitalize Hawai‘i’s ocean and coasts. It lifts up community stewards already caring for the places they know and love intimately through a future grant program to support this kuleana. A grant program will be developed in time, more to come to how you can play a role.

So much fun to support the DAR team in identifying a comms strategy and plan; and finding the words and images to name and launch this valuable program.

Congrats to all the champions willing to step up to try something new and different and those growing love and care for our ocean.

There is so much to learn 🤓Nerding out on the heavens. Loving this introduction to the Hawaiian system for organizing and understanding the Papahulilani. The name of the house that a star rises in the southeastern hemisphere, will be the same house name where it sets in the southwestern hemisphere 🥰 The southernmost location of the sun set happens on the Winter solstice, the northernmost location of the sun set happens on the summer solstice ❤️ The elliptic, the moon’s illumination, and triangulation. A happy birthday to baby Malu and to Mama Lala with *the mostest.* Giver of unconditional love to Malu boy and she still makes time to mālama our community too.

A force of inspiration! Channeling divine goddess-ness in all you do. Especially in traditional work spaces, it manifests as courage to speak truth from the heart. Leadership. You change the vibration in making it safe for others to be authentic and vulnerable, which are the seeds of innovation. The seeds of equity, change from the inside out, how transformation happens.

@lalanuss808 I learn so much from you about life, love, and work! We are all so lucky to know and love you, especially Malu, the birthday boy! Love this journey we’re on together ❤️

It was momentous and really special for me to fina

It was momentous and really special for me to finally ride Rail! AND with Ben Trevino no less, who invited me to collaborate with him back in 2018 when he was the Sustainability Coordinator at HART. Our work was such a tiny tiny piece to this entire lift; so many devoted professionals, driven to strengthen public transportation, envisioning a sustainable mobility future.

The vision of Rail itself seeks equity in improving the quality of life for West Oahu residents.

Through Ben’s vision and resourcefulness, we became @codeforamerica fellows to develop the Sustainable Mobility Lab and the journey to explore social justice through government began. We activated transportation through seeding learning experiences with community to deepen connections with each other, our places, and our transportation.

A few observations:

*Excitement on the train was palpable. Lots of chatter and curiosity. Guys were asking the attendant if they could bring their bikes on the train; talking about taking the train to the swap meet at Aloha Stadium. Kids squealed “I love this so much!” I could envision kids from Kapolei taking the train with their friends to go hang out in Pearlridge Mall.

*Beauty. Absolutely beautiful views of our island that you would not see any other way: via car, foot or ocean.

*Such a smooth, joyous experience! There was such flow and ease, so much that you could almost forget that every decision made on the design by so many folks to make it feel that way.

*Our round trip costs $3, the same cost of taking the bus. We rode from Halawa to Kapolei, and our our way back jumped off to go eat at Highway Inn in Waipahu. And got back on with no additional fees. 2.5 hours to get on and off!

*At one point, a white manu o kū literally flew alongside our train.

Sometimes you get lucky. And when you get lucky, you try not to babble out of excitement and nervousness! I “waited in line” to get to say hello to Shalanda Baker! Author of Revolutionary Power, former UH Richardson School of Law professor, heart-centered energy justice warrior and current Director of the Office of Impact and Diversity at the US Dept of Energy. CHANGE FROM INSIDE, dude. And thrilling that Hawaii’s work to struggle through is being kako‘o-ed (my own word ☺️) lifted up at the federal level as a model for the nation. (It helps too, that @samantics__ is now her chief of staff!)

Thank you @whitehouseaanhpi White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders for hosting this listening session. She is beloved because she is a truth-teller, able to express so clearly why this work matters, and with ideas and approaches that lift all of us.

I still (and will always) serve clients involved with systems change and community transformation, creating visual design and content design, conveying information with intention in ways that are meaningful to people ❤️ And i’ve developed a soft spot for energy! The Energy Equity Hui girls created a safe space for courageous exploration of redesign of systems that has been so valuable and so fun. I am now carrying out community engagement design and convenings, which, if done right, is an act of equity. It can serve to reaffirm humanness, and offer a safe environment for courage, inspiration, and even healing.

Here is a favorite passage from her book, Revolutionary Power:

“The book’s third claim — and novel contribution — is to situate the technical domain of renewable energy policy within a broader civil rights discourse concerning inequality and access to justice.”

Her words really hit home for me. I read these lines in her book AFTER I had created the playbook of community engagement for the Hawaii State Energy Office, called “Energize Kākou” that centers Native Hawaiian ways of knowing as a strategy for reaching communities successfully. It’s published on HSEO’s site as well as on stephanieink.com. Enjoy!
